On 7 January 1897, the New York Press carried “Stephen Crane’s Own Story,” an article in which he told about his experiences in the ill-fated Commodore expedition of December 1896. During this expedition Crane was stranded at sea for 30 hours after his ship sank off the coast of Florida. Crane and three other men navigated their way to shore in a small boat, but one of the men drowned while trying to swim to shore. This account later became the basis of his famous short story “The Open Boat,” published in 1897. Both the real account and the short story are included in this compilation.
